CQC received notice that CERs from the second verification of its Nigeria Efficient Cookstoves project would be issued on August 24th. The project is an investment partnership with the BioCarbon Group. This is a milestone long awaited given the difficulties CQC and its development partner have experienced with project implementation in the face of serious disruption to business by Boko Haram insurgents throughout the project area, now abating.
Through its pioneering partnership with Total LandCare of Malawi, and their joint venture Total LandCare Green, CQC is thrilled to note early proof of concept of the shared vision with TLC on sustainable affordable production of firewood by villagers within 50km of the capital of Lilongwe. Sustained delivery of bundled firewood is being supplied at the level of several tons per week to pick up points outside the city and delivered to TLCG depots for distribution in town. The pilot was funded by Irish Aid and has demonstrated that by providing a secure market price and infrastructure that reduced the burden and cost of market access, well-managed village forestry under TLC's guidance can supply Lilongwe and reduce the damage of unsustainable harvest of watersheds and protected forests in the Lilongwe firewood forage zone. The model should be replicable in other African Cities where firewood is still supplied and traded.
CQC is pleased to announce that its partnership with Malawian business interests in Atlas Energies to build the first large scale grid-connected Solar PV achieved major milestones of signed terms sheet for 100MW of Solar PV with a storage option, and allocation for a 45MW solar PV plant near Lilongwe and a signed sovereign support agreement to cover counter-party credit and convertibility risk. Atlas Energies is partnering with ibvogt of Germany as the designer, EPC contractor, and finance arranger for the project.
CQC announces the sale of the first ever International Renewable Energy Certificates from renewable energy facilities in developing countries. The sale has been brokered by Natural Capital Partners and is from the Ecopower Ishasha small hydropower plant in Uganda, which CQC manages for carbon and environmental attributes. The emerging IRecs market promises to fill some of the gap left through the collapse of the global compliance carbon market.
CQC is pleased to announce completion of field visits for the first verification of its Zambia cookstoves project, a partnership with the NGO OMACO, funded by the German development bank, KfW. This first verification is based on verified installation of 29,000 of the 50,000 stove first phase of the project by end October, 2016.
CQC is pleased to report that fieldwork has been successfully completed for the second verification of the Nigerian efficient urban cookstoves project in Kano and Kaduna States.
Ken Newcombe completes an assignment for the World Bank on the design of market entry assessment for Tier IV forced draft gasifier stoves in India, potentially leading to local production of best-in-class "super clean" stoves in India by the end of 2016.
A recent article by The Times Group focuses on a large scale solar power project that C-Quest Capital is a major participant in, along with Malawi-based company Atlas Energies Ltd. and German-based company ibv vogt GmbH. CQC is the arranger for this transaction for Atlas as well as an Atlas shareholder. 60MW are planned by end 2016. This project is significant for Malawi as demand for power is at an all time high.
Atlas Energies of Malawi, a project development partnership including CQC, has signed a binding MoU with ib voigt GmbH, the leading German solar power developer, to proceed with the design and construction of 40 MWp of solar PV generation capacity in Malawi, subject to an agreement with the Government on terms of a long-term power purchase agreement. Atlas is in the final stages of negotiating this PPA.
CQC and The Gold Standard have agreed to collaborate in the preparation of an ADALY Methodology to support the independent verification function required for clean Cookstoves projects financed under a payment for performance development finance framework. Preparation of this Methodology is an important companion activity to the launch of a series of clean stoves/clean air investments now in the planning stage.
CQC moved one step closer to the first ever financing of a large scale clean stoves program through forward sale of ADALYs. Working with the World Bank and the Government of Laos, CQC has been able to demonstrate that continued use of super clean “gasifier” stoves reduce air pollution and related morbidity and mortality cost-effectively in remote, rural, poor households in lowlands Laos. The lead researchers in the CQC designed initiative were UC Berkeley, supervised by Professor Kirk Smith, the global leader in households air pollution and health, and the ECB spin-off private consulting firm, Berkeley Air. Local NGO Laos Institute for Renewable Energy (LIRE), and the Dutch NGO, SNV played key roles in the supporting fieldwork and stove testing. Mette Rohr Boatman, of Geo-Sys consultants coordinated field work for the World Bank and undertook consumer acceptance assessments. The stove used is manufactured by Africa Clean Energy. The ACE stove reduced household air pollution by 75% and personal exposures of cooks by 45%. CQC’s economic analysis of a large scale project intervention show a plausible basis on which large scale distribution of stoves of this design offers a cost-effective means of improving health performance for families using wood fuels for cooking. The World Bank is reviewing requests from the Government to undertake the feasibility study for a full-scale super clean project funded by the private sector. CQC will continue to support the World Bank in the design of a clean stoves, clean air and health project.
CQC is developing business plans to build on the success of its Africa stoves business into Asia through its India business office. Our participation in a recent trade mission to Myanmar revealed an important opportunity to deploy our insights and competencies in the clean stoves and fuels business sector to Myanmar. Plans are being laid to enter the Myanmar market by the end of this calendar year.
In a partnership with the Santiago Climate Exchange, CQC will advise the national forestry organization, CONAF on defining and reporting contributions to adaptation to climate change from their forestry and landscape management investments.
CQC has completed monitoring plans and posted the first Monitoring Report for its efficient cookstoves carbon project in Nigeria. The entire stock of stove funded by the project has been sold and second verification action is planned for Q4 to benefit from this outcome and maintain project momentum. Project investors have agreed to test market the TLC-CQC fixed rocket stove in rural Kano in June and July with a view to installing thousands of thee stoves in villages by the end of 2015.
CQC is collaborating with Researchers at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine to explore the opportunity to make interventions of super-clean efficient cookstoves affordable to rural Malawians that, as a group, suffer extraordinarily high levels of disease from exposure to biomass smoke from cooking over open fires. CQC is a strong proponent of the disruptive technology of “gasifier” stoves, designed originally by Phillips Electronics and now produce by Africa Clean Energy as well as Phillips themselves. CQC’s collaboration is in follow up to the pioneering Cooking And Pneumonia Study (CAPS), a £2.7m MRC, Wellcome Trust and DfID (Joint Global Health Trials Scheme) funded cluster randomised controlled trial of an advanced cookstove intervention to prevent pneumonia in children under 5 years in Malawi (www.capstudy.org). In contrast to the chimney stoves studied in the trials Guatemala and Mexico, the intervention in CAPS is an advanced cookstove that reduces emissions by as much as 90% by incorporating a fan that improves combustion efficiency (12). The trial has recruited to time and target with over 4500 households representing over 9000 children up to 4.5 years old living in 150 village-level clusters having been randomised to receive an advanced cookstove intervention (two Philips fan-assisted stoves with a solar charger) or continuation of traditional cooking methods. The primary outcome is the incidence of pneumonia in children under the age of 5 diagnosed by healthcare providers blinded to trial arm using the WHO Integrated Management of Childhood Illness pneumonia assessment protocol, over 2 years follow up.

CQC joins Atlas Energies, a Malawian business consortium, to undertake the first Independent Power Production contract in Malawi and develop Malawi’s first grid-connected Solar PV. Atlas Energies is in negotiations with various solar development partners to design, construct and manage the first solar plants with a view to developing 100MW of capacity over the next five years.
Through its Transformation Advisory business, CQC has completed the first draft of the financing plans and strategy for the Nordic Council of Ministers funded Peru Solid Waste Management NAMA. The plan seeks to blend Green Climate Fund concessional climate risk financing with private sector and development finance to support the transition to a zero emissions MSW sector strategy over a decade.
CQC’s joint venture in Malawi to produce sustainably harvested firewood, Total Land Care (TLC) and its partner Total Landcare Green (TLCG), have received a grant from the Irish Government to pilot small-holder production and supply of firewood from TLC-serviced villages within 50Km of Lilongwe. The grant includes a comprehensive firewood and charcoal assessment study and an evaluation of villages suited to begin contract firewood supply from managed on-farm forestry. The grant includes the purchase of “buffalo” bikes made in Ethiopia especially for heavy loads. Producers will bring their firewood cut and bundles to TLCG’s retail firewood depots in Lilongwe. The pilot program is expected to produce 5% of Lilongwe’s firewood needs in six years on a sustainable basis.
Through an initiative by CQC to create a marketable product of a year of healthy living for women and children, the World Bank hired CQC to design a program of fieldwork and analysis to establish the consumer acceptability and cost-effectiveness of generated Averted Disability Adjusted Life Years (ADALYs) from superclean Cookstoves in the households of the rural poor in Savannakhet, Laos. Accurate measurement of PM 2.5 emissions in the baseline and followed by measurement of PM 2.5 emissions reductions using gasifier stoves from Africa Clean Energy (ACE), Lesotho began in December. Results of the field work in terms of PM 2.5 reductions and the cost effectiveness of ADALYs produced will be known in March 2015. The principle researchers are UC Berkeley and Berkeley Air, supported by the Laos Institute for Renewable Energy (LIRE). CQC will support the design of a follow up large scale stoves project in the even the pilot is successful, structuring the first transactions in forward sale of ADALYs to support clean cookstove projects.
CQC’s Transformation Advisory Business provides advice to the World Bank’s proposed Supply Side Stove Market Transformation project in Uganda. This innovative project seeks to bring the best-in-class wood and charcoal stove producers into the Uganda market by finding partnerships between producers and distributors for local assembly and marketing, and to underwire the risks of market entry with a range of innovative financing measures. Testing of short-listed stoves will begin in March 2015 following willingness to pay and consumer acceptance studies design by CQC.
