Part one of this blog series explored the need to replace outdated incandescent light bulbs for the rural poor in India and why LED globes are an ideal solution at many levels
Part two of this blog explored C-Quest Capital’s (CQC) efficient lighting program: Project Shine where over 14.5 million LED blubs have already been supplied to over 3 million households.
In this final part of our blog series, we will hear from three regions, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Bihar where CQC has been active replacing inefficient incandescent light bulbs with LED globes. The stories you are about to witness demonstrate how seemingly small changes can lead to big outcomes.
“Sunita (Beneficiary) Bihar, IndiaLights are an integral part of life, they bring progress. When there is enough light, we are more efficient. That is why having these lights is such a benefit.
“Ramya Sri (Beneficiary) Telangana, IndiaWhether studying or working, we can do it only if there is light. When we study at night, we need bright lights and for that we need the LED bulbs.
“Sashi (Beneficiary) Uttar Pradesh, IndiaWe used to light a single bulb earlier yet used to pay around Rs.700 of our monthly electricity bill. Now we get a bill of around Rs.400
As CQC’s efficient lighting program continues to touch the lives of low-income households across rural India there will be a transformation towards a brighter future.
For those making the switch, they receive improved economic wellbeing that is achieved through energy savings of 0.18MWh per year with less waste and more disposable income available from not needing to replace broken lights. Reduced eye strain from better quality and reliable light enables the pursuit of activities that improve quality of life from work and study furthering education and economic opportunities for households.
Alongside the economic and health benefits received by beneficiaries, the cumulative effect of reduced power usage result in lower electricity peak demand resulting in better reliability of power supply. Environmental benefits include an avoided +1 million tons of CO2e emitted into the atmosphere per year with further reductions to occur as more and more households make the switch.
